And the winner is . . .
For those waiting with baited breath on the outcome of the Pooling Ideas competition – the judges’ reports are in, and the winner is (drum roll):

The Argyle Stairs 1930 to 2008 by Rossco
Which, coincidentally, is also the entry featured in our last post about the competition.
It was a very close call – each of the judges had a different favourite, and in the end it came down to scoring. Which means that, in the interest of fairness, we’ve decided to award not just two but four runners up (in no particular order):
* tHE sATORI sOUNDMACHINE ‘We Art What We Share’ by funknbeats
* A Message from Tourism Australia by notoriousruz
* WHO AM I by pipshea; and
* cooling by Finland.

Rossco gets an internship with Radio National’s The Night Air and, of course, this fabulous trophy created by John Jacobs. Plus he shares with our runners up the Creative Commons prize pack, including t-shirt, CD, our CC case studies book and a USB chock full of remixable material.

Don’t forget Saturday’s remix forum – its free! (in all senses of the word)

The Argyle Stairs 1930 to 2008 by Rossco
Just a reminder for those in Brisbane this weekend to come down and check out the We Are What We Share remix forum from 5-6:30pm at the State Library (South Bank) as part of this year’s Ideas Festival.
It’s the culmination of the Pooling Ideas competition we’ve been running with ABC Pool over the last few weeks. The image from Rossco above is just an example of the excellent standard of the entries. You can check them all out here.
We’ll be showcasing selected entries and using them as the jumping off point for discussion of remix culture and its place in today’s creative society. In a cut and paste culture, are we really what we share?
We’ve put together an excellent group of experts as judges:
* remix artist and The Night Air producer John Jacobs;
* social media researcher and Youtube expert, Dr Jean Burgess;
* designer, artist and remixer Merri Randell; and
* Creative Commons Australia’s very own Elliott Bledsoe.
Plus, of course, we’ll be announcing the winners (as judged by our of experts) and presenting the excellent trophy produced by John Jacobs.
And it’s all free! So come down, see something new, and learn a little bit. After all, what else is there to do at 5pm on a Saturday?

Pooling Ideas is done – but We Are What We Share is yet to come
As of midnight last night, the Pooling Ideas: We Are What We Share competition has officially concluded. It has ceased to be. It is no more. It is an ex-competition.
And what a massive success it was in the end. We got over 120 entries – from essays to poems to videos to images. Original works, remixes of original works, remixes of remixes – all with the theme of sharing.
Over the next few days we’ll be posting selected entries, in the lead up to the announcement of the winners at the We Are What We Share seminar at the Ideas Festival on Saturday.
So if you’re in the vicinity of the State Library of Queensland about 5pm Saturday, pop in, check out the prize winning entries and hear the analysis, discussion and general reflection from our panel of experts:
* remix artist and ‘The Night Air’ producer John Jacobs;
* social media researcher and Youtube expert, Dr Jean Burgess;
* designer, artist and remixer Merri Randell; and
* Creative Commons Australia’s very own Elliott Bledsoe.
Hope to see you all there.

Aussie drama “Two Fists One Heart” releases footage under CC
Hopefully most people noticed the theatre release of a new Australian film, Two Fists One Heart, last Thursday. It tells the story of the relationship between a champion boxer (Daniel Amalm) living in Perth and his coach father (Ennio Fantastichini), as the son begins to question the role of violence in conflict resolution.
What you may not have noticed is that film’s producers have released 30 minutes of footage from the film, as well as selections from the soundtrack, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence, making it legal to share and edit the footage, even for commercial purposes, as long as you credit the original film. This is believed to be a world first for a commercially-backed film.
From little things . . .
From the 3 entries we posted about last week, the Pooling Ideas competition has completely taken off. We now have almost 70 entries ranging from photos to stories to videos, and even a dance piece.
The Pool Team has just written a great post about one of the entries, Swoop by aPatchi creations. From the Pool blog:
Swoop is the latest movie upload we’ve received for the we are what we share competition, and it’s also our first third-generation remix.
The haunting bird calls used in this clip were originally made free for use as part of the Song Bird project. The Whistling Kite, Bower Bird and the Fantail Cuckoo were all nestled in Benn deMole‘s audio piece Forgretchen. When Benn suggested that someone add a creative dance to the sounds of his audio mix, aPatchi creations was inspired and rose to the challenge. The result? Swoop.
For aPatchi, the question isn’t are we what we share but instead “are we more often than not, in this modern world of ours, what we appropriate”?
Why not respond with an entry? Only a few more days left to participate. Find out more here.

Pooling Ideas is getting going. Hurry, can’t last!
10 Days in we have our first 3 entries to the Pooling Ideas competition we’re running with Pool and the poem, a story and a picture (with some great accompanying text).
The competition closes in 10 days, with an ABC internship and CC prize packs up for grabs, so it’s time to get cracking on your own entries! You can do anything you want on the theme ‘we are what we share’. Grab your camera, pen, computer and be creative. I’d particularly love to see someone remix one of the current entries.
